While the power of authority and social conduct is a strong force, it is not always a benevolent one. For thousands of years people have questioned the ways of authority. These heroes have taken down the establishment, or the elite power holders, and made the world a fairer place in which to live. A common belief is that when the establishment, authority, or the system gains too much power, they need to be removed. This â€Å"system† that we all live in is a multidimensional vortex of misunderstanding and oppression. Challenging the system is not a battle that stands alone in the list of fights to be fought. In the American Revolution, around 1776, the Americans thought they were being oppressed by their mother country and authority. Great Britain taxed the colonies without consent which catalyzed tensions between the mother country and her colonies. Consequently, the colonies revolted and sought their independence. Because they were able to claim independence, they could create their own national ideals and promote their own interests. This questioning of authority shows the questioning of old ideas of hoary authority led to social progress for a revitalized group of people. After the Renaissance, science forged many new discoveries and began to question some outdated ideals of religion such as the shape of the earth and it revolved around the sun. Scientists who discovered new planetary relations, such as Galileo, who made monumental advances in science in his time, questioned the authority that was the Catholic Church. Because they questioned authority they were killed for heresy and blasphemy. However, if they had not questioned the authority for what they believed in our knowledge of science would be have changed colossa lly. What is the Impact of disability on childrens experiences of childhood? Every child matters and the quality of life of disabled children. This assignment explores the perceived quality of life of children with disabilities, and the impact of the United Kingdom Government Every Child Matters initiative. The World Health Organisation (WHO) define quality of life as the individuals perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live, and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns. This is an excellent definition as it places the emphasis on the perspective of the child, and in that respect is inherently free from value Judgements from typically developing adults and researchers. Montieth[l] (1999) quoted in Lewis et al (2008) looked at a cross section children with varying disabilities during her study; one of the most striking components of her research was that the children in most cases had exactly the same aspirations as their typically developing counterparts. Some wished to win the lottery or get married, have a house or even relatively minor emancipation requests such as have a ront door key, only one child made mention of their disability. Lewis[2] (2008) quoted in Fraser et al (2008) further added weight to this view when she discussed disability as moving from a medical model to a social model whereby society is disabling and not the child. I witnessed an example at my local swimming pool of this yesterday; a 1 5yr old mobility impaired girl was accompanied by her mother to the swimming pool. The following issues were politely raised by her mother at the end of the visit: 1 . No suitable changing area, only the disabled toilet was semi-suitable and this eant the young lady being placed onto a wet, cold tiled floor. 2. A transfer chair with a defective wheel, broken strap and seemingly a life of its own. 3. A defective pool lifting system for lowering and lifting into the pool. 4. Lack of staff trained in manual handling of less able customers. A trip to the local swimming pool for a typically developing child is normally a fun occasion, with minimal stress on the parents. Clearly this was an occasion that most take for granted and in this case was a fairly stressful example of how society is in effect disabling as opposed ndeed their family, specifically in relation to the be healthy strand of every child matters Generally studies investigating quality of life (QoL) have rated children with disabilities as lower than typically developing children, but these studies are often written with a subjective view from a typically developing adult as noted by Colver (2008)[4] who remarked that children with disabilities have a sense of self from birth which incorporates their [physical] impairment and embraces growth, development and living with the same excitement as most children. Colver (2008) in his conclusion adds, There is widespread acceptance of the need for disabled children to be fully integrated into society but there needs to be further attitudinal change. QoL studies already tell us that pity and sorrow should not be directed towards disabled children [children with disabilities] as they experience most of life as non-disabled [typically developing] children. Maximum effort in needed to support social and educational policies that recognize the similarity of the lives of disabled children to those of other children, and that ensure their right as itizens, rather than as disabled children, to participate as fully in society as other children. The current Government initiative is the Every Child Matters agenda, developed by the Department for Education, Education and Skills. This framework has been embedded within all of the countrys public service providers ranging from the Police to Education, in fact any organisation that comes into contact with children and young persons must have a strategy in place for meeting their obligations in relation to the 5 outcomes as listed below: Be healthy Stay safe Enjoy and achieve Ђ Make a positive contribution Achieve economic well being. Sloper[5] (2008) notes that these policies provide a context for which agencies are expected to deliver services which achieve the best possible outcomes, aiming to ensure that the children most at risk of social exclusion have their needs catered for and dont fall through the cracks of the system often only brought to light during child neglect cases. Sloper conducted semi-structured interviews with over 100 children with disabilities and their carers, although this research tends to focus on an educational perspective t is clear that there is still a lacuna of services available to overcome the social barriers to disability Emotional well being for example in children with Autistic spectrum Disorders (ASD) was seen by their parents as fundamental and more important than any other type of curriculum learning, parents felt that social interaction skills were more important to their children. This often caused conflict with teachers as they were focussed on academic goals and national curriculum levels, with many parents saying that teachers would often apologize for their childs low attainment academically; hereas the parents would prefer an altered curriculum that concentrated on more practical life skills. Sloper argues that if we concentrate solely on life skills those that can achieve will not be given the opportunity and in the desire to create a more inclusive pedagogy we may actually provide further barriers to learning and achievement. Emotional support is however seen as a key requirement for all children with disabilities regardless of the severity of their impairment; many special needs provisions have this support but there are very few mainstream schools that have uch a provision some 7 years after the initial launch of Every Child Matters, such support so widely requested may have a significant impact upon the QoL of children with disabilities. Another aspect of ECM staying safe was also highlighted by Sloper (2009) and Colver (2008) in the QoL study being inappropriate accommodation.

Such factors include the perception of the leader developed in employees and the organizational culture. When planning for communication, a leader needs to consider the barriers of communication (Barrett, 2006, p.57). Leaders also need to organize their communication strategies such that they fit well into the established organizational culture. As a builder of the communication infrastructure and in an effort to lead through effective communication, a leader takes into corporation the aspects of the systems. They include the existing communication climate, culture of the organizations, changes which may affect the organizational stakeholders, and the capacity of communication emanating from the leader to fit well with the practices of human resources within an organization (Barrett, 200 6, p.68). The second essential facet of effective communication is the role of a leader in the development of communication strategies through planning. This role calls leaders to develop measurable communication objectives and/or analyze the implication of change to the organizational stakeholders in the effort to concentrate on the communication of issues that are meaningful and related to the interest of the stakeholders. In the development of the communication strategy, a leader also deserves to engage in the selection of requisite channels for communication. He or she should endeavor to measure the effectiveness of various communication efforts. Measurement is essential in the effort to adjust accordingly to the necessary strategies, which make leaders’ communication more effective. Message delivery becomes essential after a leader fulfills the functions of communication planning and communication strategy development. To deliver the message efficiently, effective commun ication involves the utilization of various skills. These skills include presentation skills, engagement of the audience through interrogatives, listening, facilitation, and engagement in problem-solving, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation of the impacts of communication in the context of the desired message. The various components of the three roles of leaders in communication require different extents of mixes depending on the characteristics of the audience and the context in which the connection is accomplished. The appropriate mix is also dependent on the degree of attention of the audience. For instance, in situations where the purpose of communication is to resolve employees’ conflicts within an organization, no matter how presentable a leader may be, the audience may fail to develop the required attention for effective communication to take place. The desired approach in such contexts is initiating the communication process by giving a room for the audience to pose i nterrogatives related to the purpose for which the communication forum is being held. Models for Leadership Competency in Communication The considerations of the importance of communication in leadership have led to the development of various models for leadership competency in communication. Two important models are LILI and the mathematical theory of organizational communication models. Mathematical Theory Model The mathematical model comprises five main elements, as illustrated in Fig.2 below. Fig.2: Mathematical Models for Leadership Competency in Communication Source (Barrett, 2006, p.98) In an organization, the source of communication is the leader. The leader encodes the desired message. Through communication planning, the channel of communication is selected. This may take the form of face-to-face communication, emails, memo, or any other suitable channel that suits the appropriate context. The receiver of the message decodes it and sends back the understanding of the messa ge in a back loop in the form of the proper action to the source. The back loop enables the leaders to determine whether they are effective in their communication strategies. Based on the mathematical model for leadership communication competence, leaders develop the ability to determine their effectiveness in communication and their roles in it while also determining the necessary actions to handle the anticipated problems. The message is determined at the source. At this level, leaders pay attention to convey just the appropriate information. This effort reduces curiosity and chances of loss of interest in listening (Barrett, 2006, p.109). Failure to plan communication by failing to lay out a precise objective, understanding the audience, and/or failing to seek the feedback of the manner in which the information is received leads to poor crafting of communication, otherwise referred to as communication encoding. In the encoding process, considerations of the cultural context are i ncredibly paramount. Misunderstanding and miscommunication of the desired message arise from language and cultural barriers. Consulting and encoding of information so that a diverse number of people can understand it is especially important in contexts where cross-cultural communication is required. According to the mathematical theory leadership communication competency model, after encoding, effort to communicate shifts effectively to the selection of the right channels. Effective communication requires optimal utilization of communication opportunity while maintaining efficiency in the delivery of the intended message. For simple directions, emails are the most appropriate. Where the leader wants to delegate tasks, emails turn out ineffective. People interrogate them together with the intention of the leader (Barrett, 2006). Emails and memos are also not appropriate where the communication raises emotional charges in an organization. Under such circumstances, the best channel in an organizational setting is face-to-face or telephone communication. They allow the leader to evaluate and judge the impacts of the words used in the communication process. In the decoding stage, the leader becomes the active listener while the audience becomes the speaker. Through the responses of the audience, the leader acquires feedback on the effectiveness of his or her communication. The level of the audience engagement in the communicated message, agreeableness, defensiveness, and comprehension are indicators of the success of communicating the planned message. LILI Model The LILI model considers four key drivers for any effective organizational communication. LILI refers to leading, involving, listening, and informing (Barrett, 2006, p.165). The traditional approaches to organizational communication focused only on informing, which only comprises 25 percent of effective communication (Barrett, 2006). This explains why communication strategies that are aimed at informing fai l to succeed in delivering results. Communication is best achieved in the two-way information flow process. The LILI model suggests that communication strategies need to change to accommodate changes in inputs. Hence, â€Å"leaders should incorporate each of the four drivers, as appropriate to the situation† (Williams Seaman, 2001, p.455). This implies that leaders need to understand their audiences together with their information requirements. Thus, the act of involving and/or listening to organizational stakeholders is an essential step under the LILI model for gaining inputs to communication combined with the necessary feedback to enhance the effectiveness in communication. Leading in the implementation of contents of the communicated message is the facet of the LILI model, which enables the leader to establish a model for appropriate behavioral commitments to any communicated information, thus setting the necessary collective direction for an organization. Rating Leaders ’ Capacity to Communicate Effectively The determination of the capacity of a leader to communicate effectively depends on the model of communication deployed. Apart from analyzing the response of the audience after delivery of the message, leaders need to engage themselves in several interrogatives to evaluate their effectiveness in communication. These interrogatives are: Does the leader possess communication strategies, which guide all the communication activities? Does the leader possess adequate information on what people want to understand from the communication and/or how they are likely to respond to the communication? Is the message planned for delivery aligned with the organizational values, mission, objectives, and vision? Does the communication integrate perspectives of a two-way communication process? Does the communication plan pay attention to the past incidences of poor or inaccurate communication to avoid their repetition in the current communication plan? Do es the communication consider various elements of effective communication in leadership: listening, directing, informing, leading, and involvement of the audience? Does the leader factor in the employees’ preferences for communication media such as face-to-face communication or emails? Is the responsibility of communication delegated to other leaders below the leader? If so, are the people charged with communication delivering the intended messages and/or do they comprehensively understand and endeavor to improve their roles as organizational communicators? If the response to all above question is yes, a leader can consider his or her communication immensely effective. A score of 5-8 indicates that a leader is on his or her way into becoming an effective leader through effective communication. However, he or she needs to invest more time in the development of the qualities of an effective organizational communicator. A score of less than 4 depicts ineffectiveness in leading through communication. Summary Effective communication is the key determinant of the capacity of leaders to achieve their mandates of leading, directing, planning, monitoring, and controlling. Communicating effectively requires the understanding of organizational culture, audience, and information needs and interest of various organizational stakeholders. This ensures that the concerns of the likely barriers and conflicts of the information communicated are mitigated in the planning phase of communication. Effective leaders in communication possess certain leadership traits, which influence people through communication. One of the essential traits is emotional intelligence (EI). EI helps leaders compose the context, orient, and/or prepare the audience to listen to them. Apple and Child Labor Essay Children and teenagers everyday are put into child labor, to make money for their families or pay back what their families borrowed. In this paper I will examine child labor around the world and why children need to be able to live without being put under such stress and poor living circumstances. I will also be talking about how child labor is involved in some electronic companies like Samsung and Foxconn. Lastly, I will be talking about what most people don’t know; within the last couple years the world’s most known electronic company; Apple, Inc. has been one of the guiltiest culprits of child labor and of poisoning their employee’s. Child labor is known all over the world, and we need to put a stop to it now! Although child labor is illegal in many countries, many children under the age of twelve still are employed in these harsh work forces. Many under age employees are employed by using a fake identification (Thompson). By using a fake identification, children or teenagers can be mistaken for an adult. If the employer says or provides an identification that shows he is age eligible and they accept him for the job, no one would know any different. It is not in the hands of the hiring company to know that the employer is using a fake identification. Children and teenagers are not getting fake identifications and working in these factories for no reason. They are to pay back the money that their family has borrowed from others, or the lack of ability to get an education. Child labor could be caused by problems in the family, with health, or lack of food, money, or water. Multiple governments around the world look the other way. Child labor is illegal but some governments do not punish the companies or groups that use child labor. Child labor is very cruel to the children. Governments and rulers around the world insist that if adults of a family borrow money, the family has to pay it back no matter what, even if it means selling their crops for money or putting their children into the work force. Due to the fact that children and teenagers are working at such a young age, the children are committing suicide and other self-harms. This should not be happening; young adults committing suicide because they are so stressed or they do not want to work at these companies but also because they are being accused of stealing products. For example, one of Apple’s suppliers, Foxconn, accused one of their employees of stealing an iPhone prototype. The employee would not dare to steal an iPhone and would not have done such a thing to get himself in trouble. The possibilities of his pay being withheld and being physically punished was very high for the employee. As a result he killed himself; he did not want to be under the large amount of stress added to the amount that he already had (Usher). This occurs in a lot of work forces, where the employees get so stressed and out of control that they cannot bare to live anymore; it happens especially in electronic factories in Asia. Many people think of child labor being associated with clothing, furniture, or toys, but in reality it’s not. Child labor is known in every industry. One industry that we all use is the electronic industry. Child labor is used in the electronic industry in a big way, not as much as clothing or furniture, but close to it. The Apple IPAD tablet you are holding in your hand, the Apple T.V media portal you are watching shows off of each night, the Apple Iphone you just used to call or text your friend, are all made with the help of child labour. Apple’s major provider Foxconn, has been proven to have employees under the age of Twelve (Usher). Foxconn’s manufacturing plants in Asia have admitted to having child employees that have been poisoned, and some have committed suicide (Usher). This is a situation Apple has a difficult time controlling. The use of child labor in the electronic industry should not be happening at all. It should not be happening in any industry period. Child Labour has been used to try and sabotage the success of certain companies. Samsung was accused of having workers under the age of twelve working in their factories [Thompson]. Samsung has denied the fact that they have underage workers. The rumor was created by RIM (Blackberry) to sabotage Samsung and gain an advantage in the marketplace. Samsung does not have employees under the age of twelve working for them. The name Steve Jobs brings so many amazing thoughts into your head, how he was the co-founder of the largest high tech companies in the wold, the go to guy and CEO of Apple, a multi-billionaire, and philanthropist (In Your Face Radio). Steve Jobs was an amazing man, but in realty he was just like a lot of other top executives, which get carried away with their money and make some bad decisions (In Your Face Radio). Many people think that Jobs was the one who started exploiting children in the business. It was said that Steve Jobs that created the child labor issues in the business because he lost focus and innovation in what he was doing, lost control of his factories and caused such a dilemma in the industry that almost broke the company’s reputation. (Does Steve). Apple’s factory, Foxconn, has been caught with having 164 children in total working in many different factories around the world. (Clarke and Williams). Foxconn has been caught poisoning their employees with n-hexane, and have also been caught for abusing their workers. Tim Costello led a study in Taiwan, and went into to Foxconn and created a report based on the workers lives in Foxconn. The study showed that the company was abusing their employees by â€Å"corporal violence† (Myslewski). Now this is in Foxconn’s factories where they make the parts for the Apple devices. Foxconn has fully admitted to all of the above. The major part of Apple’s manufacturing that is using child labor is Foxconn. As I said earlier Foxconn is the company with over 164 children working in its factory, they have been caught abusing and poisoning their employees. Foxconn is relied upon a lot by Apple. By being caught employing children to manufacture components, has caused an upset within Apple, and the ability to reply on Foxconn has come into question. Apple is an amazing company; however we need to know more about what goes on behind the closed doors within their manufacturing plants and their manufacturing partners facilities. In my opinion Apple is guilty in this situation of child labor. Personally I will continue to use Apple’s products because I believe Foxconn needs to organize their company and other factories that Apple is associated with or Apple needs to find another supplier. In order to fix the crisis of child labor I think that there should be a worldwide legal age to work and which each government must implement. This will decrease the young aged employees that work in countries like India, China, Japan, Pakistan, and many more. Due to there being no worldwide legal working age, problems like child labor occur. Child labor needs to stop, and companies like Apple can lead the way to change just like they have led the way in technology.

Black Death THE BLACK DEATH During the fourteenth century a horrible plague spread across Asia, Europe, and Great Britain. This plague is referred to as the black death. Many people are not quite sure why the disease was given the name. The most popular reason why it might be called the black death is because it left purplish, blackish blotches on the bodies of the sick. â€Å"But if the name of the epidemic had been derived primarily from the appearance of its victims, one would have expected it to have been used at the time. Of this there is no evidence.†(Zeiger 17). Step by step, I am going to take you on the journey the black death took, from where it started, what it did, and when it ended. Bacillus yersinia pestis is the bacteria that lived in the blood streams of medieval rats and their fleas. Some time in the late 1340’s the bacteria made its way from rats to warm blooded mammals like humans. Due to earthquakes and other environmental occurrences, medieval rats were forced to cross the paths of humans. They first got on board of ships at ports, then headed to cities where they spread the disease. It was not the rats that spread the disease, but it was their fleas that bit humans and infected them. There was three forms of the plague; bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemia. Each form had different symptoms. â€Å"The most common form, called bubonic, is characterized by the formation of egg-sized swellings at the site of the flea bite, usually located in the armpits, groin, or neck.†(Wark). Which ever form someone contracted they died a disgusting death within days. Their whole body would get covered with nasty blotches of blood under their skin, and any fluid excreted from their body contained an unbearable stench. Florence, Italy was a very hard hit area because it was located right on the Arno River where ships would dock to import and export goods. It was estimated that between 45,000 and 65,000 Florentines died from the plague. â€Å"New cemet eries had to be consecrated quickly to receive all the dead bodies.†(Carmichael 110). With so many people dieing, some tried to write their friends from other countries and warn them with what to look for. Others tried out running the it when it turns out all they were doing was spreading it. After conquering Florence, the plague moved towards England where it killed off fifty percent of the population in London.

1.1 The purpose of â€Å"Person-centred values† is to ensure that the service user needing care is placed at the very centre of the decision making process about their life, the services and support they want and need. 1.2The service user is always placed in the centre of the planning of the care programme required, in that they will always be consulted and that there views will always come first. Therefore the plan is made for the service user, and it should include all aspects of care, from the Social and Health Services, from that service users family and from the voluntary sector. The service user will then always be provided with the best care and feel safe and included with their best interests. 1.3 The person centred approach to risk includes making an assessment with the people involved in the plan such as the service user, their relatives and other professionals. Risk taking is part of a person centred approach as this controls the service user to have choices about w hat they want to do in their lives as well as to be part of their community. Not allowing individuals to take risks can have a negative impact on an service users life to not live it as they want. Service users must always to be consulted and their views must always come first. No two care plans are are the same because each service user is different from another. Service users should be involved at every stage of their care plan, from deciding who to involve, how to meet the service users needs, the support required and how to feedback on how the care plan is working. 3.1It is always important to establish the consent of the service user when providing any care or support. This is essential to include that service user with any decision making, in order to ensure that they do not feel left out or ignored, this way they can understand and agree to their care and support. 3.3If consent cannot be established I would discuss the problem with management and, if necessary, the individual’s doctor and advocate. I would also make a record of this, which I would sign and date. 4.1Active participation benefits the service user because that person is always made to feel that they are alwaysm important, and that things are done for their benefit, with their consent. This ensures a positive approach for the individual that makes  them an active part of how they choose to live and puts them first and in control. 4.2 The possible barriers to active participation could be the emotions, the disabilities, and the attitudes of the service users involved, all of these these things can decrease active participation by the service user in any activity. 5.3Workers personal views should not influence an service users choices as they are not facts and can discriminate against against the service users choices. This may decrease the encouragement and self confidence of the service user, they could then loose trust in the worker. They would not be working to the service users best interests. 5.4.It is important to encourage questions through discussions with the service user, we as support workers are there to listen to them, we need to make them aware of the policies and procedures, their rights and complaints procedures. Also, they need to be aware of any avocates they may wish to know about. 6.1 Self – A service users identity is how we recognise their potential and their own personal qualities. Self esteem – This is how the service user values themself. Well-being – This is the general mental and physical health of the service user, their needs must be met in a physical, emotional, social and interllectual basis.  The links between are the effects of possible discrimination, abuse, lack of services. All of these things can reduce levels of self-confidence and self-esteem, affecting the service users emotional health. 6.2 Treating each person as an individual is important as a support worker, we must be aware of the service users feelings and keeping the privacy, and maintaining their dignity as well as respect for their religious, spiritual or cultural beliefs. We must work in partnership with other organisations and health professionals to achieve realistic goals. We need to encourage individuals to gain self-esteem and listen to encourage to also develop their independance.

‘Disaster management can be defined as the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular preparedness, response and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters. Disaster — The term ‘DISASTER’ has been taken from a French word ‘Desastre’ (French ‘des’ means bad and ‘astre’ means star) meaning bad evil star. A disaster whether natural or human induced, is an event which results in widespread human loss. It is accompanied by loss of livelihood and property causing devastating impact on socio-economical conditions. India is one of the most vulnerable developing countries to sufer from various disasters like-flood, drought, cyclone, landslide, earthquake, forestfire, volcanic erruptions, roits, terrorist attacks etc. Natural disasters- It is an event that is caused by a natural hazard and leads to human, material, economical and environmental losses. They are beyond the control of human beings. Nature provides us with all the resources, but it can be sometimes cruel also. Some examples of natural disasters are- the 2001 earthquake in Bhuj, Gujarat, the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the 2008 earthquake in China, the 2007 cyclone in Myanmar. Eg. Floods, Drought, Earthquake, Volcano, Cyclones, Landslides, Avalanches etc. Human-Induced Disasters- Man made disasters are caused by human activities such as nuclear explosion, chemical & biological weapons, industrial pollution, war, accidents etc.Some serious destructions caused by humans, which affects the human beings and the socio-economic conditions of that area. For example- the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, train derailments, serial blasts in Mumbai in 2008 (26/11) etc. Eg, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Disasters. Disaster Management It is the discipline of dealing with and avoiding risks. In general it is the continuous process by which all individuals, groups and communities manage hazards in an effort to avoid or minimize the impact of the disasters resulting from the hazards. It is almost impossible to fully control the damage caused by the disaster, but it is possible to minimize to some extent by these ways- (1) By early warning given by MET. department through radio, TV. (2) The police control room , fire control officers , the near by RED-cross office and other rescue teams should be informed. (3) Spread awareness about disasters and tips to handle them. (4) Space technology plays a very important role in efficient mitigation of disasters. (5) Major loss of life and property can be avoided with carefull planning along with and effective warning and evacuation procedure. (6)We should cooperate with the rescue teams. It is our moral and social duty that we should help in arranging relief camps for those who have suffered. Role Of Local People In Managing Disasters- 1. Spread awareness about disasters 2. Organise mock camps in their holidays in neighbouring villages to train people to cope up with disasters 3. The basic role of students is spreading ‘AWARENESS’ of what to do during and after disasters. This would lessen the death toll, panicking, paranoid and uncontrollable people running about 4. Be a part of emergency rescue team 5. A big aspect of disaster management is preparedness 6. Students can also provide first aod which would help authorities in saving lives 7. Deforestation should be checked 8. Buildings should not be built on steep slopes and every construction should follow the Architechtural Parameters. I refuse to answer that question! The new (intimidating) college essay On January 25, 2012, someone on the College Confidential discussion group posted this thread: Did you ever dump a college from your list because of the type (or number) of essays? Responses flooded in, mostly from parents of students who had indeed given up on an application because they were intimidated by the essay questions, and many from the students themselves.   One woman’s daughter dropped three applications and added one that had easier essay requirements. One aunt reported that her nephews applied to one school only – Iowa State – because the school did not require essays. And another self-proclaimed lazy procrastinator chose her colleges based on the ease of their essay requirements. Colleges dropped by students ran the  gamut and were headed up by Wake Forest and U Chicago:   Barnard, Brown (2x), BU, Bryn Mawr, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, University of Chicago (8x), Claremont McKenna (3x), Columbia University (3x), CMC (2x), Cornell, University of Delaware, Duke, Elon, Georgetown, Grinnell (2x), Marquette Honors Program, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, MIT (2x), UNC (3x), Northwestern, Notre Dame (2x), NYU (2x), U Penn (3x), Princeton, Puget Sound, Rice (3x), Rutgers, Tufts (2x), Stanford (2x), Syracuse, UVA, Wake Forest (8x), and Yale (2x). Why the aversion to unique essay topics? I could rant about how students are lazy or haven’t received sufficient training in thinking for themselves or thinking creatively.   I could suggest that if our educational system did a better job on these fronts, and with teaching writing in general, students would not avoid writing essays that challenged them to invest time and thought.   I could also suggest that students don’t start their application process far enough ahead of time to ensure they have the time and attention for some uncommon essay questions. All of those things might be true, but I am more interested in the schools’ logic behind asking unusual question such as â€Å"What does Play-Doh have to do with Plato?† (U Chicago), â€Å"What is your favorite ride at the amusement park?   How does this reflect your approach to life?† (Emory University), â€Å"Imagine you have to wear a costume for a year of your life.   What would you pick and why?† (Brandeis University), and â€Å"What would you do with a free afternoon tomorrow?† (Yale). Why the inclination toward unique essay topics? Colleges may be showing themselves to be current with the times, as suggested in The new college-admission essay: Short and tweet(ish).   Some applications ask for short essay answers of 25 words, such as â€Å"My favorite thing about last Tuesday† (University of Maryland), perhaps catering to the Twitter generation.   Tufts, George Mason and the University of Dayton allow prospective students to submit a video essay instead of a written one.   Students might jump at the chance to communicate in ways that are spreading like wildfire in the world of social media. The right fit In the College Confidential discussion, most students reported that they dropped schools not simply because of the essay requirements but because there was an additional reason the school was not a good fit.   Some were not excited about their on-campus visit.   Some realized when they were asked why they wanted to attend a particular school that they had no good reason.   Conversely, some students reported taking on writing difficult essays because a school was their clear first choice.   Some loved writing the very same essays that sent other students away (Wake Forest and Chicago essays included).   And one student actually rejected a school (Wash U in St. Louis) because they did not ask a supplemental essay question!   He thought the school was trying to increase its U.S. News rankings by encouraging applications.   Not surprisingly, two other students applied to Wash U (as well as to many other schools – Dartmouth, Harvard, and William Mary to name a few) b ecause of the simplicity of their essay requirements. Perhaps colleges like Wake Forest and U Chicago are shooting themselves in the foot.   Several anecdotes appeared in the College Confidential discussion about students who got accepted into one school with a simple application (Harvard, for instance) while they were still working on essays for another school.   Schools with longer or more complex essay requirements might be losing some qualified and motivated students in addition to the ones who just don’t care enough to jump through the hoops. Yet for most schools, it appears that they are doing a good job of weeding out applicants.   If an Honors application intimidates you, that’s a very good sign that you are not meant to be in that program.   If an essay challenge makes you realize that you’re not up for that challenge, regardless of the reason, then that school has done you and itself a favor.   What a great strategy for winnowing down the number of applications to a pool of students who will face an extra challenge or two because they want so much to go to a particular school. As one member of College Confidential, stated, â€Å"Frankly, there are too many well-rounded, excellent students applying to the best universities to distinguish a select few without asking stranger, creative questions.
